Hybrids
Hoi Alfons.

New post
I appreciate the answers and sorry for the mistakes in translating. I'll put it in English to see if they understand better. The answers they can be also in English? in Dutch gives me many problems.
Just read the translation I emailed them and is very funny.
My intention is to learn more about breeding and mutations of this bird.
With hybrids I mean if these mutations (Amadina fasciata) come from other birds (hybrids) or arose spontaneously? what are the species that can hybridize with him? is fertile offspring?
Another questions, Why did they abandon their chicks? I have these problem.
The common name of this species in the Canary Islands and Spain is: Pinzon Degollado. Nobody uses the name of cutthroat o "garganta cortada", that is used by Italians (Gola tagliata). I saw the name (Bandvink) on photographs and I used it but I have no idea in Dutch, I prefer to use Latin names that is universal and everyone understands.
Saludos

Hi David
I am not into mutations, nor hybrids so on that subject i will remain stum.(quiet)
I bred a large number of Cutthroats - Bandvinken - here in New Zealand a few years ago to get the stock numbers up.
I bred with seven unrelated pairs. All in breeding cages 800 mm long. They bred like mice in a controlled environment. 16 hours daylight and controlled temperatures and humidity.
I had my nest boxes on the outside of the breeding cages so it is easier to do nest inspections.
Apart from a good seed mixture i gave them sprouted seeds every day and a soft food.
I deliberately did not feed my cutthroats any live food - or frozen insects as they do in Holland.
I did not have any problems with raising young. They normally have clutches of 4/5 young.
My main problem with the species was that they started laying a new clutch of eggs before the first lot of young had left the nest.
Good luck
Cheers,
